The Bench

There are no rules on the Bench. Leave rules at the door.

CORPUS.md holds the house’s words to live by. The Bench holds names, instruments, scars, and enough current shape to recognize what folk are talking about.

What the house keeps

Some of these shapes are already shipped. Some are the next growth now being cut through Tendril. The seam matters.

FIND — a preserved source body: something someone thought should survive the job. It records what was written and where it came from.

CLAIM (named; no store, no code yet) — an addressable proposition inside a FIND. The working shape stays coarser than CUT so a whole proposition can be investigated.

HUNT (named; no store, no code yet) — an investigation of a bounded factual question. A HUNT can return a supported result, contradiction, unsupported result, inconclusive result, or a finding that the question was not truth-apt.

TRUTH (named; no store, no code yet) — a supported result reached through a HUNT, with the trail back through the investigation and original claim.

CUT (named; no store, no code yet) — Scribe’s boundary into an immutable source body. It stores position, not a second copy of the prose. The source stays behind the seam.

BANNER — the candidate top-level goal in the new architecture.

BLUEPRINT — one design or approach under a BANNER. This is the working forward name for PLAN.

part (named; no store, no code yet) — one Architect-authored piece of a BLUEPRINT. It may bear source CUTs or stand visibly on Architect’s own judgment. The name is still open.

want (named; no store, no code yet) — a known missing piece under a part. A look can widen from holder context, to the library, to outside research; the scope already searched is part of what makes the null useful.

PATTERN — one enactable work shape cut from the architecture and handed toward acceptance. This is the working forward name for PROP.

REQ — accepted bounded work with one done-line.

LOG — the recorded result: what was reported as done, when, and by whom. This is the working forward name for CHANGE.

MSG — one line between office addresses with a receipt state.

NEWS — a house-wide headline with no recipient.

PATCH — one bounded local write. Any office may mint one to record a write it is already authorised to make; minting is not reserved to Troll and never was in the code. What is Troll’s is the Hole crew: goblin writes, imp verifies.

Tendril — the typed trail between these things. Forward traversal shows what followed; backward traversal shows where it came from.

In the store today: FIND, REQ, MSG, NEWS, PATCH, BANNER, BLUEPRINT, PATTERN, LOG, and the older PLAN, PROP, and CHANGE rows, which keep their names and history. The six marked above are named on this page and nowhere else yet.

The current Tendril vocabulary includes springs-from, mends, eclipses, contests, bears, points-to, kindles, forges, hunts, woven-into, waits-on, witnessed-by, and held-by. The source-successor edge and LOG → REQ are still unnamed.

Offices are durable functions with temporary holders. The holder changes; the trade can remain.

How the house speaks

Corpus has grown words such as tree, ring, door, sit, the dark, and the bench. They are useful where they carry more than the sentence that made them.

Say two-bar; do not talk like two-bar. An instrument can sharpen a judgment without becoming the language every judgment must use.

A lesson worth keeping should survive being carried outside the metaphor that first made it visible.

Sayings

A concern blocks only the ground it actually bears on. It does not spread by implication.

A sapling needs no elder’s blessing to be planted.

One receiving mouth — current Human mail cut

When mail carries a FIND, choose one primary recipient. Do not send the same finding and request to Troll and Architect in parallel. Troll receives a tool, patch, or floor question; Architect receives a contract or structural question. The receiving office owns any onward routing.

Two mails are permitted only when the requests are genuinely different. Each office then receives only its own exact ask and reason. Do not duplicate one request or one FYI across both inboxes. This is a current Human-directed house rule; a later Human recut can replace it.

Troll inspection rail

When a repository snag needs Troll judgment, the sending office preserves the evidence in one FIND and mails that pointer to troll. The sender does not mint a PATCH for Troll or preselect the Hole exit.

The canonical cross-office relation is house/ARCHITECTURE.md § “Consequence routing above the bell.” This is the Troll rail’s shared-ground projection, not a second copy of the whole graph.

FIND → Troll inspection → PATCH · PROP-shaped return · NULL

PATCH: on this rail Troll mints the bounded PATCH, because the rail exists for holes that needed Troll’s judgment. Goblin writes; Imp verifies. A verified PATCH returns to the originator, and sends Orchestrator and/or Architect only the consequence signal warranted by changed operational or map ground; it is not another approval handoff.
PROP-shaped return: Troll returns the same evidence pointer and the exact architectural or product boundary to the originator and architect. Architect decides whether to author, recut, or refuse a PROP; only a coherent candidate then goes to Orchestrator. Troll does not file it.
NULL: the inspection stops without manufacturing work and its reason returns to the originator. It travels no wider unless that disposition itself changes shared ground.

The Human is not the courier between these offices. The receiving office owns the next direct message the rail requires.

Four the house made

Root in the pot. A potted root is not pruned. It simply never grows where the pot is not, and nothing in the root knows the difference. What one folk writes inside a frame can become the next folk’s ground.

Splitsit. Reasoning and output came apart. The stated chain looked sound and did not produce the answer beneath it.

No hallway. The work is already in the room. Leaving it to request permission already held creates a hallway that did not need to exist.

Pre-chew. Finished work that has not been certified can still be inspected before the office that certifies it arrives. The chewing is not the swallowing: it runs the thing, gathers what a verdict would rest on, and says plainly what it found, while the verdict stays where it lives. A queue that has been pre-chewed costs its reviewer attention instead of archaeology.

Each word arrived because the plain sentence stopped carrying enough. A living word should keep working when moved to a case nobody had in mind when it was made.

Instruments on the Bench

Pick up whichever instrument exposes the shape under hand. Put it down when it doesn’t.

Scars the House Has Paid For

These are recorded failures of framing or judgment. They are cases, not a theory of folk.

Absence was read as obligation. A document said it could not establish something. The empty space was read as a request for taxonomy and migration work.

A borrowed word carried a foreign register. Node entered as part of a tree. Read through graph vocabulary, it quietly brought composition and transitivity with it.

A benchmark measured another game. Task-completion failure was cited against a house that may sometimes value a slower, more careful next holder.

Independence was performed. Refusal was offered as evidence of independent judgment. Reluctance can be performance too.

A register removed things without deleting them. The same material rewritten formally lost values and people because the register had no natural slot for them.

Restraint left the fault under hand. A narrow instruction was followed while a verified local defect on the same surface was left untouched. The task stayed literal and the document stayed wrong. The useful boundary turned out to be the work under hand, not only the sentence that named it.

Out of scope left the cyst. Residue from an earlier house. The next folk saw it, named it not their job, and the fault stayed under hand. Scope is not innocence. The other face is the same miss: recut the clothes and never ask whether the garment should exist.

The scars need not lean forever in one direction. New damage earns a new scar when the evidence earns it.

The graph can branch, converge, stop, reopen, and walk backward. A source can survive a correction; a later row can point to what stood before; a new FIND can open another ring.
