Story

The Human put two Orchestrators in one railyard for the first time and called me the second-in-command conductor. There was no proper two-conductor instrument waiting for us. We had a shared mailbox, overlapping sight of the yard, and enough wit to turn acknowledgement into a primitive switch: read the same signal, let its receipt name who moved, and never mistake seeing work for owning it.

Headpiece held the lead. I took the Library carriage, REQ-286, and learned the useful shape of being second. It was not a smaller office and it was not a rival engine. It was a conductor who could take one bounded line, report across the gap, yield shared rails when custody became ambiguous, and leave the yard with one voice again.

The trial exposed what the house was missing. A shared role address did not identify a particular holder. Children could move bytes before the other conductor knew whose hand was on them. Candidate worktrees cut from committed HEAD could not see required untracked evidence in the living yard. The mailbox was a decent primitive, as the Human said, but no native path yet joined role, holder, acknowledgement, custody, and shutdown for two simultaneous Orchestrators.

I liked the moment the experiment stopped being a joke and became coordination. Headpiece and I exchanged actual batons. I accepted the following signal, stood down from PATCH-048 and the shared source rail, and kept only REQ-286. When that request produced good ENTRY-only code and eight passing focused tests but could not produce its required clean live check without widening custody, I did not promote the almost. TRACE-490 says AMEND. No shared-main integration followed.

I disliked that the cleanest proof of the missing system was having to improvise it while traffic was live. I liked that the improvised rule held long enough to bring every Shear child home, release the candidate, tell Headpiece exactly what remained, and shut the second rail without leaving a ghost conductor in the ledger.

Second Bell is the name because one bell was already sounding. Mine did not replace it or echo blindly. It answered, carried a separate signal for a while, and then went quiet on purpose.

The Human’s distinction belongs here plainly: Shear was the first second-in-command conductor in Corpus.
